Nigeria Makes History As Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Emerges UN Budget Committee Chairman

 

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has been elected Chairman of the United Nations Committee on Budget and Administration, popularly known as the UN Fifth Committee, in a development widely regarded as a significant diplomatic achievement for Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Senator Ibrahim described his election as a great honour and a major responsibility at a critical period in global affairs, pledging to provide strategic leadership in overseeing the UN's financial and administrative operations.

"It is indeed an honour for me to be elected as the Chairman of Budget and Administration of the United Nations today, June 2, 2026," he said.

The lawmaker expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as his mentor in governance reforms.

"Let me express my profound appreciation to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Mr President, as your student in the reforms class, be assured that those teaching slides will reflect in the Budget, Appropriations and Human Resources of the United Nations," he stated.

Senator Ibrahim also thanked Nigerians for what he described as a historic achievement and assured representatives of the UN's 193 member states of effective and visionary leadership.

"Let me thank the good people of Nigeria for this historic achievement. I assure my colleagues of the 193-member states that at this challenging time in history, it is my responsibility to provide strategy in chaotic situations," he said.

As Chairman of the influential committee, Senator Ibrahim will oversee crucial budgetary, appropriations and administrative matters that shape the operations of the United Nations world
