Series #42: Deep Understanding of People's Language, A Form of Shield
There are countless ways people are emotionally hurt, manipulated, or placed in difficult situations while still alive. One of such ways is looking down on languages and assuming they have no value, no relevance, and nothing meaningful to contribute to one’s existence, especially when they are not one’s mother tongue. That assumption is far from correct.
In security parlance, a deep understanding of language goes beyond vocabulary or grammar. In this context, it refers to the ability to read between the lines, detect danger signals, interpret hidden meanings, and understand how language can be used positively or negatively.
You gain strength through people’s language when you can sense emotions, understand expressions, and recognize messages that may not be spoken directly. Anyone who cannot easily decode messages in unfamiliar languages may become vulnerable to being trapped, misled, or caught unaware.
Living among people of different linguistic backgrounds requires showing love, tolerance, and interest in learning key words and expressions in their languages. Hatred for a language often limits one’s ability to understand it. However, understanding even basic expressions can serve as a form of protection and preparedness against danger communicated through coded or indirect language.
Strategically, a security expert who is multilingual is likely to perform more effectively than someone limited to only one language.
Consider a person who understands English, Yoruba, Hausa, French, and other languages. Such a person is likely to contribute more effectively to crime prevention and intelligence gathering than someone who rejects or ignores other languages. Likewise, residents who make efforts to learn common expressions in the languages spoken around them already possess an added layer of awareness and protection.
Simple statements may carry hidden meanings depending on the situation and tone in which they are delivered. Expressions that appear harmless on the surface may sometimes suggest danger, warning, or hostility in certain environments. This is why wisdom, alertness, and sensitivity to context are important.
What this series seeks to emphasize is the power of language, both in its positive and negative dimensions. Every language in the world carries surface meanings as well as hidden interpretations, depending on the context in which words are spoken.
A security-minded individual reflects carefully on every word spoken, including the tone and atmosphere surrounding it, in order to remain safe and vigilant at all times.
