Daily Security Tips That Train Your Thinking

Series #46: Installation of Low Perimeter Fencing Boosts Your Protection

Many people purchase houses with high perimeter fencing without making any modifications, believing that tall fences provide the best form of security for their homes and families. When asked why they prefer high fencing, many argue that it prevents intruders from peeping into their compounds and makes it difficult for criminals to climb over. However, climbing over a fence is not the only way criminals gain access into a property. In some cases, chemical substances may be applied to weaken fence structures and create easy entry points.

Learning is a continuous process. We should not continue to confine ourselves and our families within outdated security assumptions. Criminals often prefer targeting homes surrounded by excessively high fences because such structures unintentionally prevent neighbours, passersby, and security patrol teams from noticing suspicious activities taking place inside. When fences are too high, homeowners cannot easily observe what is happening outside, and people outside cannot see signs of distress within the compound.

In reality, it is easier for people to rescue occupants of a house with moderate or low perimeter fencing than those living behind fully enclosed high walls. A home under attack can be identified more quickly when visibility is not completely obstructed. Likewise, passersby or neighbours can more easily detect suspicious movements or unusual gatherings around such properties.

Protecting ourselves should also involve maintaining a level of visibility that allows us to monitor our surroundings while enabling trusted neighbours and security personnel to notice emergencies when necessary. This does not mean exposing one’s privacy unnecessarily. However, living alone, living only with children, or leaving children in a house surrounded by excessively high fencing may create additional security risks.

Families are sometimes attacked from the rear, front, or side boundaries, especially when criminals gain access through neighbouring compounds that are vacant or poorly monitored before crossing into nearby properties.

A security-conscious person considers building fences and structures that can allow timely assistance and intervention during emergencies or attacks.

Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
