Daily Security Tips That Train Your Thinking
Series #45: Know Your Neighbours and Be Good to Them
A single tree does not make a forest. In many ways, a neighbour is like family and often serves as the first point of contact in times of need or emergency. That is why it is important to take time to understand the people we live with, share ideas with, or simply coexist with within the same community or apartment.
A failed society is often the result of our inability to study our environment and understand the people around us. A safe home contributes to a safe neighbourhood, and a safe neighbourhood is built by the collective actions of its residents.
Every community is made up of different categories of people, the wealthy, the middle class, and the less privileged. Together, they form the structure of a neighbourhood. The relationship among neighbours should be like a chain block; once one part is broken, the entire community can be affected. In many cases, the closest family to us is our neighbour.
We owe our neighbours two important duties: first, to know who they truly are, and second, to support, correct, encourage, and advise them in our own little way whenever necessary. If we notice something wrong, we should speak up. Remaining silent may eventually affect us directly and, by extension, the entire neighbourhood and society at large.
The neighbour you underestimate today may be the same person in the best position to rescue you during an emergency.
When you travel, a neighbour with whom you maintain a good relationship can help watch over your property and environment.
A security-conscious person relates well with neighbours and does not see himself as superior to those living around him, regardless of status or position.
Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
