Lagos Introduces Interactive Board Game to Boost Yoruba Learning in Schools

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board has partnered with SIKIRABU Africa Ltd to enhance the teaching of the Yoruba language in public primary schools through an innovative educational board game.

The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, features “SIKIRABU,” a culturally inspired learning game designed to help pupils improve their understanding of the Yoruba language, culture, and traditional values through fun and interactive play.

Speaking at the launch, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr Hakeem Shittu, described the project as part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous languages and strengthen cultural identity among young learners.

According to Shittu, the introduction of game-based learning tools will make Yoruba lessons more engaging and enjoyable for pupils, while encouraging deeper interest in their native language.

“Language is a vital part of our identity and heritage,” he said, stressing LASUBEB’s commitment to ensuring children embrace indigenous languages from an early age.

He added that the board game would not only improve pupils’ proficiency in Yoruba but also expose them to important cultural values embedded in the language.

However, the LASUBEB chairman advised pupils to use the game responsibly and avoid becoming overly distracted from their academic work, urging learners to maintain a healthy balance between recreation and studies.

Shittu also called on parents to support the initiative by encouraging their children to use the board game as an educational tool to deepen their knowledge of Yoruba language and culture.

The partnership forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to promote indigenous education through creative and modern teaching methods within the basic education system.
