Ogun Nears Energy Independence As Abiodun Inspects New Gas-Fired Power Plant

Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment towards achieving energy independence and positioning the State as Nigeria’s leading industrial hub, following the inspection of a newly established gas-fired Independent Power Plant (IPP) at the Oke-Mosan Secretariat by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Speaking during the inspection, Governor Abiodun described the project as a major milestone in the State’s broader “Light Up Ogun Project,” aimed at ensuring stable and affordable electricity supply across Ogun State.

The Governor said that the 4-megawatt gas-fired plant currently serving the State Secretariat represents only the first phase of a comprehensive energy strategy designed to reduce dependence on the national grid and stimulate socio-economic development.

“What you see behind me is a gas-fired independent power plant that is currently four megawatts. It gives me great pleasure and joy that we conceived this vision alongside others and are now diligently implementing it,” he said.

He emphasised that reliable electricity remained the foundation for industrial growth, economic expansion and improved living standards, stressing that his administration had determined to end the era of erratic power supply in the State, disclosing that the State government had commenced the advancement of a larger 34-megawatt power project located in Onijanganjangan, recently commissioned by President Bola  Tinubu during his visit to Ogun State that would serve as a major driver of industrialization and investment growth in the State.

Also speaking, Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Mr. Jide Onakoya, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Energy, Mr. Femi Omisanjo, said the establishment of the Ogun State Electricity Market would guarantee the sustainability of the administration’s energy investments.

He explained that the State had moved beyond infrastructure development to the creation of a comprehensive regulatory framework with the establishment of the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

According to him, the Commission would oversee 3 State-owned entities namely; Ogun State Generation Company, Ogun State Transmission Company and Ogun State Distribution Company.

Omisanjo, noted that the “Light Up Ogun” initiative was designed to attract investors, improve citizens’ welfare and create a localised electricity market capable of delivering uninterrupted power supply to industrial clusters and residential communities at competitive rates.

“The end game is to be confident enough to invite more people and more investors to Ogun State, guaranteeing a stable environment where businesses can thrive without the heavy burden of high energy costs,” he said.

He added that the present administration remained committed to ensuring that no part of the State is left underserved in the ongoing drive toward affordable and reliable electricity supply.
